End of 2007, Dawn of 2008

by christock on Dec.30, 2007, under Living Life

As with all other New Year’s eve, I’ll be heading down to Fuad‘s place for a new year’s bash, a repeat from last year’s but nevertheless something I always look forward to for fun and excitement among closest of friends.

Why not watch the fireworks at Thames River, or go to New Year’s Eve clubbing events, I hear you ask. Well, let’s just say I’ve been there, done that and maybe this time would be the last time I celebrated New Year’s in the United Kingdom, hence I’d prefer a more personal yet wild approach to it. Personal because my closest friends left would be there, and wild because ANY party at Fuad’s is W-I-L-D!

Anyway I was reading June’s blog at I thought wow, she summarized her achievements in every month of the year 2007, and that was quite amazing. I don’t think I could, seeing that this year was my final year in Imperial College and so been studying my ass off. So it would have looked like this: (1) January – I studied hard (2) February - U studied hardER (3) and so on and so forth lolol.

I suppose I’ll just list down my achievements la. Good to read back anyway and see what I’d do in the future. I have to say though, this year’s was many a ‘first time’s :)

1.
Successfuly pulled off the last Careers Fair (2007) in which I was part of the organising committee, raking in a total of 37 companies, a huge improvement from the previous year. It’s awesome to see your events getting better and better each year!

2. Raked in 2 multinational-oriented jobs that earned me £££ and lots of experience here and here while watching my freelancing career earn me up to £850 per project.

3. Went to Ibiza, Spain with two beautiful ladies and had beach, sunsets, beach, wait did I already mentioned sunset too?

4. Visited cool places like the Ice Bar, Cadbury World among others.

5. Attended my first ever International Football live at the Emirates Stadium, Brazil vs Portugal (yes with both the famed Ronaldo’s and others!)

6. Pulled off the Projek Amanat Negara IV (April) for the first time since 10 years which led to the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit 2007 (August), a very big breakthrough to nation building among the younger generations. I am very proud of this one! (Recently also spearheaded the First ASEAN Roundtable Discussion)

7. Dined and wined in Jamie Oliver‘s restaurant, Imperial College’s Centenary Ball, Pearl Liang among others!

8. Managed to pull off a crazy Valentine’s Day drama! (It’s an achievement that’s not so dodgy la but to protect identities I will not elaborate :P )

9. Travelled the whole of the United Kingdom with my family, starting from London -> Cambridge -> Edinburgh (passing through York) -> St. Andrews Golf & Country Club -> Dundee -> Glasgow (passing by Sterling) -> Lake District -> Birmingham -> Bath (Stonehenge) -> Windsor Castle -> London again.

10. Most importantly, I am now an honourable graduate from Imperial College London, a receiver of a BSc. Joint Mathematics & Computer Science degree. I was glad I took up the challenge ages ago, knowing that I couldn’t go to the United Kingdom due to financial problems I still applied to the best of Universities, received straight A’s for A-Levels and God pretty much took care of the rest. Also, I finally met someone I can trust my life with in the most dramatic way ever, someone who will never cease to make me wonder how lucky I am in this life. As they always say, the blessed are in a better circumstance to bless the more unfortunate, and that will be my aim throughout my life whether you like it nor not.

I suppose I’ll be re-editing this as I go through my life this year later when I have more time to think, cause it’s been honestly a jumble of a life! I guess I can say my 23rd year have been a very fruitful year, meeting all kinds of cool friend both online and offline who brought me to do many kinds of things. Thank you all, thank you all so much for the wonderful year. Happy New Year to you, all you readers out there who bothers to check up on me!

May 2007 leave in peace as we sing Auld Lang Syne, and welcome the year of 2008 as it dawns upon us full of renewed hopes and opportunities!

First ever Christmas Pressie

by christock on Dec.29, 2007, under Living Life

of this year, that is. Ah, such is life now that I’m no longer a student. Wahaha.

Here’s my SPANKING NEW sweater from Animals!

So how do I look? Does it fit me?

A present from someone I never once expected from. It’s occasions like this that remind you what a queer world we live in.

Her: Come out. I need company.
Me: What? Now? So random. You need help?
Her: No I don’t need help. Just company. You free?
Me: Yeah sure, (at this point I thought there was some problem she needed to share) I’ll be out as soon as I can. Where are you right now? (half expecting her to be on some roof in some tall building in London)
Her: I’m in Regent street. Come now okay? Ok bye.

And there I went, plucking my ass from the chair I’ve been sitting on for God knows how many hours, and sending myself out into the cold, windy night in London.

And received myself a surprise Christmas gift from the most unsuspecting woman. Suddenly, you can’t help but to notice that the black and white London suddenly became bright and vibrant with every colour filling the spaces about your eyes.

It’s all thanks to Claudine Yap who turned her blog into a photography portfolio, something she has always wanted to do. Good luck Claudine, and many thanks for making this Christmas a better one for me this year :)

Christmas Dinner 2007

by christock on Dec.27, 2007, under Food Galore

As promised, I made sure to bring in the Christmas Spirit into our house of 29 Bridgeway Street even if it means spending the whole day in the kitchen. Aimran, his sister and Ben were around to help, and the 4 of us celebrated Christmas as a family :)

Instead of the usual Bread & Butter Pudding, we decided to use Kiwi to replace sweet sultanas and raisins (because we ain’t got them, and Aimran suggested we use it!!). This is how it looks like before being baked, kind of interesting… Let’s see what comes out.

The End Result: Didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to be. Needless to say, though, that the family had some of it anyway, so appreciative :’( Not sweet enough, and the Kiwi… well, let’s just say we’d stick to sultanas and raisins next time =.=;

My full-proof sweet potato pie. For the ingredients, refer to this post. Safe, savoury and sweet, potato, sweet potato and cheese ALWAYS makes a great easy snacking alternative :D

The Assorted Steamed Vegetables in Butter Sauce is a clever mix of yellow corn, green pea pods and brown chestnut mushrooms sprinkled with home-made butter sauce to give a festive flavour to our Christmas Dinner set!

To freshen up and provide brighter festive colours, the assorted steamed baby carrots and plum tomatoes with a fluff of alfalfa on top provided the freshness in taste that wakes you up into the christmasy mood!

Normally Yuletide Turkey is meant to be WHOLE and THEN you insert the STUFFINGS into its cavity (once you remove the insides, that is). However I was faced with a problem of wanting to use the stuffings, but all I had was two huge-ass major monkey ballslarge turkey thighs. What was I supposed to do?

Then it hit me. My recollection on something called the “chi bao kai” came up, and EUREKA, I thought of putting the stuffings OUTSIDE the turkey, have that wrapped up into the aluminium foil and then oven cook it from within! Of course, I first had to let the thighs be cooked separately so that you get that amazing oven-baked turkey texture :)

The stuffing, made of herbs, onions and cashew nuts, is then cooked OVER the 3/4 oven-baked turkey thighs and huge onion rings *click*, all within the comfort of an aluminium bag made to release steam so that the turkey doesn’t get soggy. That way, the turkey meat will also absorb the flavours from the stuffing, thereby giving it the intended aroma and taste. The last few minutes of baking was open-aired at the top to brown it, along with sauteed red onions for sweetness.

I thought it was okay, not that impressive but at least it created fun among the housemates! Overall the turkey was a little too dry, seems like more work could be done about it. Definitely will try to improve next round! Thanks to Ben for the much needed help in the kitchen, and Aimran’s sister for the delicious pesto pasta w/ roasted salmon! Aimran, erm, well, I’ll just let Ben taruh you la hor tee hee

Inadequatenance

by christock on Dec.24, 2007, under Raving Rants

As Christmas dawns, and thus the coming of the new year of 2008, one inexplicably can’t help but feel daunted against the all familiar task of succeeding the previous year with an even greater ambitious one in the next.

I feel the moment now. On a Monday of Christmas eve. 24th of December 2007. Waiting around now seems foolish when the world is moving in a much faster pace than it once was. Somehow or rather, something must take place and resume its course.

I am now currently still waiting for that moment to come. If it does not, I’ll go to it.

I am not a survivor just by name.

Merry Christmas everyone, and for those who will get pissed drunk for the next 5 days after, a happy new year to you too!

On a side note, tomorrow I will be making:
1. Bread & Butter Pudding – An original English specialty
– Replacing sultanas with half-sliced white grapes
– Replacing cinnamon powder with icing sugar
2. Turkey with Onion and Sage Stuffing
– Replacing whole turkey (costing 75 pounds and above!!) with turkey thighs (huge nonetheless)
– Since stuffing is meant to be inside, but we’re using thighs only, it’s going to be on the outside
3. Christmassy Vegetable Fondue
– Mix of baby carrots, green beans, peas, red and white onions and cucumber
– Mayo-lime, turkey-roast gravy and sour cream w/ chives
4. Eggnog with Baked White and Red Potatoe (Sweet Potato) Pie

Top Ten Viral Videos – A MUST Watch

by christock on Dec.19, 2007, under Raving Rants

This post is an uncommon one, but something caught my eye on TheLondonPaper just yesterday. One of the section talks about the top ten videos that are most watched for its bizarreness, or more adequately put, their awesome hillarious ratings. Here I will go through them one by one, giving them a personal verdict. I hope you’ll enjoy the videos as much as I did reviewing it! And now, the videos, from the last place is…

10. Lolcats the phenomenon

Take a picture of a cat doing something cute. Then make up a witty caption for the cats, as if they could talk. Compile it up and you have a freaking hilarious video. My verdict: Absolutely oozing with pure kitty cuteness! A MUST watch! - 4/5

9. Detention Centre rehearses Thriller

What do you get when you have 1500 inmates from a detention centre at Philippines rehearsing for a Micheal Jackson MTV? One super amazing play, that’s what! It’s definitely not some kind of punishment, rather more of a performance meant for some kind of event, but must have taken a lot of discipline to pull it off. Like, A LOT of it, no kidding. My verdict: You’ll find yourself so absorbed with the performance that you can never believe these guys are actually prisoners within an actual detention centre. Kudos to the amazing star “couple” and all their colleagues for this amazing performance, I’d so love to be there to watch it. – 5/5

8. Battle at Kruger

A pride of lions, a herd of buffalo and 2 crocodiles. A story of family love, survival and battle instincts. If done properly, a natural blockbuster. My verdict: I came across this a long time ago, and watching it a second time still gave me that satifying, heart-pumping sensation as the parties battle for their lives. Amazing piece of nature thriller – 4/5

7. Olympics logo tweaked

The 2012 logo backlashed. I couldn’t find the original video (or more accurately, the London authorities have taken it down) so the video above is sort of like a remix of what seems to be a very, very uninspiring logo of the London 2012 Olympics. My verdict: Nothing much to be seen. I suppose the complain came because a figure of 400k pounds was slapped upon the creation of this logo, which didn’t turn out as good as it was valued for. What is your take on it? – 1/5

6. Dramatic prairie dog

A prairie dog is a hamster look-a-like. The video is a really short one, but it tells of the dramatic life of this particular prairie dog. It got world-wide attention one day, and become loved by millions of viewers. One actually liked it so much he created a one-minute video of it. Some guys are just off the tops lol. My verdict: Short-lived humour, though I must say its expression is worth a million viewers lol! – 3/5

5. Sam the shoplifting seagull

Do you love cheese Doritos? I know I do. But ever heard of a seagull’s passion for it, who goes as far as to shoplifts from a newsagent in Aberdeen when nobody is around?! Ridiculous, I know, but let me introduce to you a truly Aberdonian seagull who’s name is Sam. My verdict: It’s amazing how something like this could get international fame, but I suppose nobody could help but love little Sam for his adorable antics. When a human steals he gets scorned, but when a bird steals… *shrug* haha! – 3/5

4. Leave Britney alone!

I’m pretty sure a lot of you have heard of the infamous Chris Crocker who defended Britney Spears with unparalleled passion. Here it is again, much to my bemusement. My verdict: I’ve seen it before, I’m seeing it again. I can’t help but laugh at this poor guy! Evil I know. Come let’s watch together, popcorn, anyone? :P 4/5

3. Groovy Dancing Girl

One girl with very, very eccentric but catchy moves. An amazing song by Daft Punk- “Harder Better Faster Stronger” which incidently got turned into Stronger by Kanye West, my current favourite song! What more could I ask for? My verdict: Superb value for entertainment, if fast-forwardish bone-popping wierd dance is your cuppa tea. If it’s not, just watch it for the sake of watching it. I’ll bet my arse you’ll be entertained :D 4/5

2. Chocolate Rain by Tay Zonday

I once got a friend invite on youtube, through yet another youtube friend who is an artist that I still listen to. His name is Tay Zonday, a twenty-five year old aspiring singer with a baritone voice that doesn’t quite match his baby face features. It was that very same reason that I took an interest and listened to not one, but many of his songs. It has this reeaaally irritating quality that I can’t quite adjust to, yet it sounded so unique that I couldn’t stop myself from going away. My verdict: Not something that you may be able to take, because even I find his voice a little… fake, to say the least. Ah but who knows, one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure, so do check it out! – 2/5and last but not least…

1. Miss Teen USA 2007

A USA beauty queen was asked to answer a question which goes along the lines of why Americans aren’t able to find their own country on the map. Miss Caitlin Upton then become infamously popular for spewing out a lengthy and garbled account of the American education system. I suppose the video speaks for itself really. My verdict: Honestly, I don’t think this one deserved the top place, and my verdict testifies to it also. I supposed maybe people like to watch something that makes a fool of another person. Still, I thought a beauty queen in an international standard SHOULD be at least have a pair of better-than-average brains, and would do better than to try and come up with an answer beyond her capabilities. I know a girl who can do better and STILL look as good as she does. bleh. – 2/5

A Home Cooking series – *GULP*

by christock on Dec.17, 2007, under Food Galore

was a sound I thought Mr Catfish had made. Awkwardly placed lying on the plate, I thought it couldn’t be possible. Nevertheless, I thought I should at least check on the poor frozen thing, just in case it was still alive.

If it was, I’d probably let it go. No, Mr Tock does not have the heart to be a guilty party of any kind of murder.

“Hi, I’m Mr Catfish. I just got thawed from being frozen in the freezer. Do I look delicious to you? I do? Thanks!”

Indeed, Mr Catfish has to be dead. And so I wasted no further second and proceeded to take him to his favourite bath of tumeric, sesame oil and black soy sauce concoction. He enjoys no other bath, because this one makes him smell especially delicious, so very yummy. Of course he needed help to move, the poor thing.

“Hmm. Something smells good. Are we going to have dinner? Yay! :D

Mr Catfish has always been a funny child. He started playing with noodles when he was just but a tiny tadpole. In the end, I should think he would have loved to be buried together with noodles.

Buried in Indomee Instant Noodles, that is.

Am I evil? NO! I am just. My name is Tock the Just. Heck, even I can be the new CJ in Malaysia if I wanted to. At the very least I could guarantee you that Mr Catfish is safely tucked away in the darkest of chambers, never to re-emerge again…

NEXT: TiraMINGSu

Here’s a Tiramisu dessert made by Kah Ming the Camel, the size of a shoebox! TO know this talented guy please leave a comment in the shoutbox and I’ll put you through to him. Tankiuvelymuch.

NEXT: Western Dinner

You know you’re the laziest person alive when all you eat for dinner a week in a row is just what you see above. Well, at least the sausages change. Some days Irish, some days Bramby’s Apple filling, some other kinds of sausages. Bleh, at least it’s colourful, no?

NEXT: Fried Meehoon

My housemates and I decided it would be House Cleaning Day last night. Nice what, lovely Saturday evening (fact is it’s almost 5 degrees Celcius outside, so we decided to stay within the comfort of our heaters =P ). So we cleaned. Well, they cleaned. I cooked. Love cooking. They loved it too. My cooking, that is. RIGHT GUYS?

Got the house a new Wok. Need la. A necessity. Of course all the usual sauces, herbs and spices is a must also. Kitchen is my territory. I say get new Wok, I sure get one. And wooden spatula., too.

A close up at the dish: Prawns, Fish Cakes, Chinese Mushroom, Garlic, Sweet and Light Soy Sauce, Sesame Oil, Egg, Pepper, Chicken Stock w/ Mushroom base, Chilli, Prawn Powder. Missing: Greens. Reason as stated above.

Why I will never accept nothing less than fresh prawns: Sweet and springy meat when slightly cooked, skin used to boil and produce prawn stock for further use, can absorb flavours quickly while being cooked. NEVER GOING TO USE SAINSBURYS COOKED PRAWNS EVER AGAIN!

The end.
ps. – anybody wanna send message to Mr Catfish? His family still in the freezer, can pass to them instead.
