The Fu Chuk Mystery

by christock on Apr.28, 2008, under Food Galore

So we went to dinner last night, and decided to try out this amazing place called Yeun’s Steamboat. Why is it amazing? Let’s see, how can I put this as straightforward as possible to you…

Now, I normally HATE putting blurred pictures in my blog, but for the sake of explaining to you what I want to explain, I will let it pass this time. Take a look at the picture below; what do you see?

Can you see the crowd of people standing outside the restaurant? No, they aren’t there to group up for a gang fight la! Seriously, these guys are waiting outside for their table…

Now can you guess what was our number when we got to the waiting list?

….

Come on, take a wild guess, take a look at the picture clearly again.

30? Nay… 40? Nope….   We were number 64 in the waiting list, like WTH right?! Luckily we were just three hor, so we managed to get in after half an hour or so nia (actually thanks to our girl who sort of hounded the man in charge lol) So we were told to go to second floor, and this is the scene that greeted us.

Uh huh. That’s just one floor. Look at the number of tables, look at the ceiling; the amount of ventilators there is crazy! Now imagine the same scenario like this, for another 3 floors!! (There’s even a lift that takes you to each floor ok!)

Everywhere people are eating and talking and having their steamboat fresh from the table. Funnily enough it doesn’t seem to run out. The ingredients, that is. Me and our girl were new to this place, so we wondered where could all the food come from? That’s when we noticed this.

And this.

And this.

It’s a FREAKING BUFFET!!! LIke, where else can you find STEAMBOAT BUFFET LA! Free flowing fresh seafood and meat, loads of different kinds of balls, vegetables, noodles, you name it they have it! The scene was amazing, and imagine, the same kind of layout on every single freaking floor. My mouth cannot close la. It was just too damn amazing.

Now leh, you’d think we’ll try to eat our money’s worth since we’re it’s buffet style right? I mean, which Malaysian in their right mind will NOT pass up the chance to make a restaurant bankrupt for giving them a chance at being so kaisu that they’ll turn into greedy bastards eating everything in sight, just to make up for the money lost? NO ONE I TELL YOU! So hor, look at our dishes below and tell us what’s wrong with it.

Hmm. Fu chuk. and mushrooms. okay.

Hmm. ok la got sausage, and seaweed (makes the broth sweeter!). BUT wth, more fu chuk?!

I MEAN, WHAT KIND OF MONSTER EATS FU CHUK BUT NOTHING ELSE WOR!?

…………….

Oh yes la. Should have known right? The infamous duo: Timothy Tiah and Wong Wen Qi. For those who don’t know, this Tim is also known as the F*cking Fu Chuk Eater (FFCE) back in his Lengmou days, hence you only have to add one to one to get two. Okay la, credits to Wen Qi aka Samantha because we did want to add in the seafood leh, you know how many $$$ go down the drain or not, since seafood IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE INGREDIENTS in the selection?! Unfortunately, we had too much to handle, and Mr. Tiah does not eat seafood one. At ALL. My stomach also not as big as it once was I guess. pfft. You go take a look at the steamboat bowl, can you count the number of fu chuk floating on top or not? lol…

Anyway, so there you go. Yuen’s Steamboat, located opposite Sunway Pyramid- over the other side of the highway, is the place to go for biiiig gatherings because you really get to eat how much you want. Buffet-style Steamboat. Of course you’ll be penalized for waste of food la, but that’s a given. The price? For the three of us with a few round of drinks, it went up to 60+. That’s like 20+ for each of us, VERY DECENT!!!

Would love to go again la one day. But maybe, this time hor, we leave this Ewe Tiam out of the equation. Like come on la, SO MANY FU CHUK CAN DIE ONE OKAY?! Sigh lol.

Stall Food Series 2: Soon Fatt

by christock on Apr.27, 2008, under Food Galore

Ever tried Soon Fatt’s all-famous Roast Duck located at Pudu, KL? Look no further, just oogle at the pic below:

So, what do you think? Looks kinda amazing right? See again, and notice that it’s actually Roast Goose! A little too big for a duck, no? When we arrive there at 1.00pm, their ducks were all sold out. Yes, it’s THAT famous, and you’ve got to book in advance to secure a duck, through its jovial owner Micheal Chu.

 Yet another popular dish is the Char Siew aka Roast Pork. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, it’s flavourful burst of bbq sweetness goes really well with…

 Their rice. I know, it’s just rice, but it really tasted so good! Probably more of ajinomoto goodness :P

Many thanks to my seniors for taking me around tasting all kinds of famous stall foods during our lunch break. I guess there are many more to come!

The Soon Fatt Beijing Roasted Duck stall is located on Jalan Pasar, opposite the Pusat Makanan Peng Hwa which is right beside Hong Leong Bank.

My First Wife is a Gangster

by christock on Apr.24, 2008, under Events & Travels

whom I met in the Hennessy Artistry event at Zouk, KL. Thanks of course to Simon who provided me with VIP tickets.

Pei Shan, Victoria, KY, SImon and myself

Yes, ladies and gentleman, I met my first wife in a clubbing event. Who is she? Still cannot recognize after viewing the picture below?
I don’t blame you. She was heavily made up, Gothic-style. One of her favourite past-times. I kid you not. You can try asking her but I cannot guarantee you’d be chopped up and served in one of her many fav Char Siew Fun dishes. Yes, she is none other than our popiuler Suanie.

We didn’t really get to know each other well that day. Even during our mamak session afterwards. All I know was that she could do things no one else can. For instance, she could call for a Burger Ramli and get it delivered straight into her hands, and in any way she demands! Like, how often do you see something like that!
She also calls the guys at the mamak stalls by their nama glamour, for instance, one of them was called Jon Bon Jovi… Why? I don’t know, he looks nothing like him! But hor, when he did something to make her angry (though I don’t know how she could be angry, so angelic face ok) he ran away straight away and hid behind the stalls… and later smsed her to apologise. PHWOAR

Anyway the truth is… she just took me in as her first husband. I had no say in it, completely. All her kulis were around, and I didn’t even had time to think. You know, like the Ah Long show, SAME THING LA! (except I’m not so sissy.. right guys? :D ) The next thing I knew, I had to fork out 20k per month like some kind of protection contract!! Like hell I don’t even EARN that kind of money okay!? So they decided I can start paying after 6 years of working, while enjoying the benefits of being Suanie’s first husband. wtf.

One of her Kuli, Mr. KY

Below is an excerpt of our MSN conversation:

suanie.net says:
okay first husband i am going home
suanie.net says:
go blog about your first wife’s cameo in movie ok

See, I know it sounds like an innocuous chat, but really, the truth is she’s already threatening me for 5k JUST FOR FREAKING COMMENTING ON HER POST! Sigh… so now you know la… better you vote for her now at this website. Just click on Swifty’s “Chicken Rice Mystery” and press VOTE. Or suffer the consequences. *shudders*
Well that’s the story of my first wife, Suanie the Gangster. Why do I feel like somebody has already made a movie out of this?

Stall Food Series #1

by christock on Apr.22, 2008, under Food Galore

Thanks to KY and my friendly colleagues I’ve been searching up and down for good stall foods to eat within KL, during lunch breaks or after office hours. KY’s motto is really quite different from me; he finds cheap and good food, wherelse if you notice, my tastes are kinda expensive ;)

Anyhoo, a bunch of friends and I decided to meet up and tackle this off-road stall place which I forgot the name, but it’s located off Jalan Raja Laut. I actually got lost on the way there and got really frustrated, but it all evaporated as the sight of their specialties overcomes all things.

Yes, the above is one of their specialties which we had not one but TWO portions! Crispy and light on the outside, fluffy and moist on the inside, it promises to challenge your sensations, taking you to a level of texture superiority that you so often miss when having a good round of “o-chien”. Made of eggs and small, fresh oysters, this tasty combination is definitely something you cannot miss :)

Now, another specialty they provide is the Yu Tao Mai, ie Fish Head Mee hoon. We didn’t have that but instead just the fish itself. Rumour says that the fish provider will have to compensate for a whole day’s business if the fish delivered isn’t fresh, so you can guarantee your ass that this fish is as fresh as it can get! Furthermore, their sauce is REPLENISHABLE! How cool is that? Why would you want to replenish it? Simple; the for its exquisite taste. It’s like drinking the essence of the fish itself, thanks to the long boiling time with fresh fish bones.

This dish is not uncommon in many Chinese restaurants, nevertheless it didn’t disappoint us. I guess you can’t really go wrong with it, other than differentiating between the freshness of the prawns, which I can say, was most probably very fresh. Another dish we enjoyed with our white rice.

At the end of the day we were done and the table was littered full of smiley faces. Not one single piece of meat were spared in this seafood feast, which was amazing since we had 1 fish dish, 2 egg-oyster dishes, 1 prawn dish and 1 vegetable dish, totalling 5 dishes for the 5 of us! (and do remember, the size of one portion is nothing to laugh about!)

Initially I thought the place did not have any air-conditioning since I heard it’s by the roadside, but luckily there was something indoor and that definitely kept my mood up I suppose haha.. cause I’m just too used to enjoying my meals in an extremely comfortable environment :P All in all I guess it was an extremely enjoyable occasion for our get-together session. Thanks to Heng Kai for organising it with me, Cheng Chun, Kevin Ong and Syn-In for your wonderful time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sigh, I didn’t want to make it a big hoo haa but my first wife in 6 years time decided to reveal the gag in her blog. How oh how do I get involved in these silly situations?! But I don’t mind la, she’s popiuler and she’s cameoing in Swifty’s “Chicken Rice Mystery” so go vote for it in BMWShorties’ 2008 website!
On a separate note, Zain of Randomalphabets suddenly mentioned my name in his KL Freeze post! Zain if you’re reading this, I’m really honoured to be part of the KL Freeze, which I talked about in this post so do check it out!
CEO Series: Lim Beng Choon
by christock on Apr.22, 2008, under Living Life
Just to let you guys know, we of the Young Corporate Malaysians have been organising the CEO Series events, where we invite high ranking corporate figures to give a speech on how they have arrived to where they are, relating their corporate philosophies throughout their tenure and will be followed by a healthy Q&A session. If you’re interested do contact us at youngcorporatemalaysians @ gmail.com and I’ll let you know more about it!
So here we have last week was Mr Lim Beng Choon from Accenture. Though he wasn’t as charismatic as a certain Datuk Tony, he certainly believes in meritocracy and honesty. I asked him what was the most challenging aspects of his career, and he said “Human Interaction”. I agreed with him wholeheartedly, and lucky for me, it’s been something that I’ve been honing my skills on since I realised I was quite gifted in that arena. I really looked up to him because we have almost the same principles in life. You can read more about it here, credits to Mr Lee Hanxue who wrote a summary of the event!
That’s Beng Choon above, small man but packed with a powerful punch.
Our office in KL. Nice, no? :D
