Going to the World Bloggers and Social Media Summit 2011?

Social Media is officially a social phenomenon, transcending age, gender and creed. I am part of it. You are part of it. But is that really enough? The World Bloggers & Social Media Summit allows you to find out what and who is driving this trillion-dollar industry and how you can benefit from it.

The other day I was invited to the soft launch that was held in the trendy atmosphere of Luna Bar, Pacific Regency Hotel Suites on the 27th of April 2011 to commemorate the upcoming and much anticipated event, which will be held from the 15th to 16th of June 2011 at the Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Mr. Shahul Hameed Dawood who is the Organising Chairman and Group CEO of MyEvents International was on cue to speak on the nature and benefits of the Summit with regards to the impact and revolutionary changes bloggers and in particular the social media has brought about in the way we communicate and transact commerce. He also gave a preview of what’s in store for the upcoming Summit and revealed some of the prominent speakers at this event who have succeeded in using these real-time tools to its maximum social and commercial potential. Curious about the speakers? You will find them below, but hey, if you’re not too lazy go download the full brochure here: [download id=”5″]

I guess those who are serious about taking their businesses to the next level and even novices should come and learn how to harness the power of social media to further their brand reach and impact. This could be your only chance to get up close and personal with leading minds in social media and pick their brains whilst receiving practical tools to build and grow social media strategies. For me, knowing them via Twitter isn’t just enough to make an impact- score some brownie points by meeting them live, and allow the chemistry to sink in and who knows, one of these guys could be your future business partner in this lucrative industry!

If you think this summit is just about local speakers, you thought wrong: the summit will also feature prominent speakers from abroad, who will share on what’s the latest social media methodologies that are pushing the boundaries of commerce. Some prominent celebrity bloggers from Malaysia who have made a name for themselves in the local and international blogging and social media scene as well as some of the nation’s renowned bloggers such as our ex Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and BN Youth Chairman, Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar aka @khairykj will appear as guest speakers.

I am definitely going not only as one of Malaysia’s relatively known blogger (well, they did invite me to come :D) but also as a business owner of SocialGrooves.com, which is a social media consultancy specializing on NGO

Reasons why I'd not get the iPad 2 – boring 1024 by 768 reso

March 10, 2011
By Erna Mahyuni from Goreng.my

iPads, iPads everywhere. You see them in cafes, the news and as a very popular contest giveaway. Besides being the cool “in” gadget of the moment, why are people using it? Is it more than a pretty paperweight? Goreng had a chat with three iPad users to find out why the device rocks (or doesn’t).

Lucas Lau, (Twitter handle @luc_sohow) a freelance photographer and tech writer for Lowyat.net, is somewhat ambivalent about the iPad. “There is no exceptional feature for me.” He does find the size and form factor suitable for when he needs to be out and about. “It does comics and magazines really well,” Lau concedes.

Fashion editor Elfie Jane, who blogs at http://monstahblog.tumblr.com, says using Twitter and Facebook is much better on the iPad thanks to its bigger screen. She finds it handy to have around to stave off boredom when she’s out and about.

Social entrepreneur Christopher Tock (Twitter handle @spinzer) initially found the device “useless.” That is, until he acquired a portable Wi-Fi dongle and now even takes it along to the bathroom! “In the end, it has to be connected online to really serve its purpose,” says Tock.

Handy companion

When asked what they used the iPad for, the three were quite diverse. Lau uses his iPad to read graphic novels as well as magazines as the online versions are much cheaper than the print equivalent. “It’s also a way to show potential clients my photography portfolio without having to lug my laptop around.” He does not game on the iPad and says the device is mostly a companion on long commutes. “(For me) it is pretty much a travel device,” says Lau.

Elfie on the other hand says she mostly games on the iPad with her favourite games being Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and The Sims. She reckons she only uses it for a couple of hours or so a week.

Contrast that with Tock who estimates he spends at least an hour a day on the iPad, checking news and his social media feeds as well as the odd iOS game.

On apps, Lau considers purchasing them a given. “I don’t think anyone who owns an iPad doesn’t buy apps to go with it.” Apps of note for him include the comic reader Comic Zeal and Wired Magazine’s iPad version. He also bought a hard shell case from Mastermind Japan. “But that’s just for the looks,” he says, not being particular about scratching his gadgets.

What could the iPad improve on? Lau says, “I don’t like the fact that the iPad is just essentially an overgrown iPod Touch.” He feels Apple should emulate Google and introduce a true tablet OS instead of using the iPhone’s iOS. Elfie says she still has trouble typing on it and thinks the iPad would be much improved with the addition of a camera.

Tock finds the iPad bulky and finds the

What’s obvious is the iPad does have its uses. Want to share what you use your iPad for? Email editor@goreng.my.

Throw the Angry Bird to boys who broke your heart, Jamie!

This, is Jamie Liew.

IMG_2626

She just turned 19 yesterday.

IMG_2628

I was at the party. Though much, much earlier. As early as @JeffroOng this time round!

IMG_2632

Two years ago I was at the same party. With the same people. Same household. Same gorgeous sister. Same motherly mother. Same quiet grandmother (cause I dont’ speak her language, see?)

IMG_2639

Same, nostalgic food. Love the spaghetti. Well, there were additions too. Super spicy Kerabu.

IMG_2678

We all looked different. No, not older. Younger.

IMG_2650

The theme for the party was… Back to School.

IMG_2652

And back to school… we did. With glasses. LOL.

IMG_2618

My version of back to school… is playing with plush toys. Not that I liked it. I LOVED it.

IMG_2656 IMG_2657 IMG_2660 IMG_2663

Oh yes, all of us had the plush toy syndrome. Don’t think you can resist from… the Angry Bird.

IMG_2684

Jamie turned into something else. A goth cosplayer. LOL.

IMG_2693

We posed.

IMG_2702

More came.

IMG_2672

The question is… are you jealous yet? 😛 Happy 19th birthday Jamie Liew, visiting your house was a blast! Yes, even without @tanyeehou! Haha 😀

Ever heard of the Youth Nation Summit 2011? First in Malaysia!

So what exactly IS the Youth Nation Summit 2011? Well, do you know AIESEC? Have you heard of myHarapan? Chances are if you don’t know them, then you may not have the chance to live up the full potential of your youth during those younger days! Dubbed the “Power of Y”, the Youth Nation Summit 2011 is a platform that gathers 500 Malaysian youth leaders who are passionate and dedicated to making positive changes in their communities and in the world. The two organisations I mentioned there are doing the impossible by organizing one such platform!

Basically, when you never had the chance to realize your full potential, this platform allows you to do so, by networking and collaborating with the brightest minds of Malaysia to do something so powerful that we’re not just limited to Malaysia, but the world! (sounds similar? That’s cause myHarapan, one of the organizers, are the same guys who provided the necessary backing for me and my team on the EYE project!)

So the question is, WHY do something like this? Well, let’s take for example, the rising alert on global issues such as HIV/AIDS and global warming – they should no longer be taken lightly and in a nation of a young population like ours, we believe that our youth leaders should be trained to equip and prepare themselves as future leaders who will be ready to tackle the uproar of such global issues. Put simply, this summit will serve as a platform for them to equip themselves with the necessary skills and resources as well as to engage businesses and government to support their ideas.

Ok, ok, on with the details then.

Date: 28th – 31st May 2011
Venue: University of Malaya
Delegate fee: Free
Application Form: Download from www.aiesec.my/YNSummit
Application Deadline: 10 May 2011, 11.59PM (GMT +8)

Read on further to know more about the Summit, and of course, if you have any questions do comment and I’ll endeavor to reply them 🙂

Finally, please take the chance to blog about this amazing event. Whether you’re a student, a lecturer or a CEO from some amazing multinational company, every bit counts. Believe in our young, believe in the generation that will lead Malaysia to a country like no other, for we are all Malaysians 🙂
