1 Million @MalayMail Nationwide – Now THAT's raising the bar! #1MMM

Imagine a Friday morning filled with Malaysians carrying around a newspaper with the iconic red headline above (not theStar!) ALL around you. Like, EVERYBODY.

Image

Well believe it or not, it actually happened as the Malay Mail rolled out their 1 Million Malay Mail (1MMM) campaign to the public. I know, sounds very much like a 1 Malaysia Malay Mail campaign since the government loves to add 1Malaysia to almost anything, but hey, at least the branding sounds more practical in an unprecedented move to equip one million people with a paper to read filled with information, goodies, crossword puzzles (they are fun and challenging) and lots more.

The point is, people need to start reading. That’s the reason why I’m so FOR this initiative.

From their website, apparently some lucky people even got some free instant chicken porridge and packets of detergent. Honestly, very weird give outs but hey who am I to complain lol. (Remember I already dished out FREE Egg McMuffins from McDonalds on my birthday, 19th Nov hehe, so just accept free goodies lahhhh)

Anyhow I found some interesting “reviews” around the net but I’d never truly believe what other people say (that’s just me lol) and that’s why I just needed o see it with my own eyes.

As usual you have the current news, politics, latest happenings, education issues, business, sports and foreign news and even cooking stuff (cannot miss out :p) but most of all what I like is that the articles do stand out and contains opinions & stories without prejudice – even featuring our Prime Minister Najib Razak himself, DAP’s Karpal Singh & PAS’s Abdul Hadi Awang! Talk about empowering people with knowledge so they can make the smarter choice 😉

Okay I know this must mean elections are coming but hey, guess we should all read what he has to say so we can later grill him for it, on Twitter at @NajibRazak at least! After all, no story means nothing to debate about.

That said, I guess Malay Mail has been trying to be the news that has the courage to call a spade, a spade. Have been following on Twitter so far at @MalayMail, and continues to be one of the only news account I follow. Provocative, I like!

Why am I blogging about the newspaper? As you know I am part of the Imperial College Alumni Association Malaysian chapter (ICAAM) and we have gone into partnership with them to attract our alumni to register with us, to join us in our upcoming activities featuring Ambiga Sreenevasan on the noon of 19th of January 2013 and our much awaited Gala Dinner – more details to be announced later! Check out our website at www.icaam.org.my or you can also see our advertisement at www.mmail.com.my

Thank you Malay Mail for spearheading a new direction for all Malaysians to move towards positive contributions, to build a united and harmonious Malaysia!

Definitely a #betterMalaysia project.

Celebrate my 28th with a FREE Egg McMuffin from McDonalds!

You heard that right.

I thought you guys have been the awesomest friends out there for the past 27 years of my life. So I asked myself – what would be the best birthday ever for me as I turn 28 this 19th of November 2012?

Then it hit me – to kickstart all you Malaysians out there with a Monday you WON’T FORGET: With a FREE Egg McMuffin in conjunction with McDonald’s Breakfast Day! It’s sure to keep your blues away *winks* (hey, it rhymes too)

Egg McMuffin is made with a perfectly cooked farm fresh egg, deli style smoked chicken roll and cheese in toasted English Muffin. Enjoy a great start to a great day.

So I hear you thinking, TRUE OR NOT?! Of course true lah. Where have you heard of any McDonalds promotion that doesn’t require you to BUY something then only GET something for free?

Don’t have lor. But not for my birthday. This 19th November you just go up to ANY outlet nationwide between 7am to 10am and GET IT FREE with NO PURCHASE REQUIRED and without CONDITIONS!

Well except a few lah, namely:

 • Redemption Period : 19 November 2012 from 7am to 10am (duh!)
 • Only one (1) free Egg McMuffin per customer (yes lah, don’t be greedy)
 • Free Egg McMuffin limited to the first 1,000 customers per outlet
 • First come first serve basic (lambat tak dapat)
 • Redemption hours of free Egg McMuffin very by restaurant
 • Not valid with McDelivery (it’s like not attending my bday party, innit!)
In any case, I cannot believe it’s been an amazing 28 years since I was born, a number I still cannot come to terms with. So many development, so much experience, too many people I’ve met, the very few I’ve learnt much from, the even fewer who stuck with me through the bad and the good… So so much to share I don’t even know where to start!
but this I do know…

That the Prestige Malaysia Top 40 Under 40 of 2012 Awards I’ve received this year is a symbol of all your contributions to myself as an entrepreneur, a young corporate, a political activist, a gamer and a social advocate. I plan to dedicate a post to all those who have made me who I am today, including my father who recently was part of a USD 5 billion project in Laos recognized by

both Prime Ministers of Laos and Malaysia as well as my mother, who recently got to meet with the President and CEO of Maybank Group where she has worked for the last 36 of her years.

It has truly been a wonderful year and I hope to pass the blessings to all of you out there, in a bid to create a #BetterMalaysia as how I, a rakyat, truly sees it! Thank you and enjoy the Egg McMuffin on my behalf 😀

Time to Take A Break and Visit the VIP Lounge in Ipoh, Perak

[flickr id=”8175148244″ thumbnail=”small” overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”left”] So one day out of the blue I told myself I just had to fly up to Ipoh to check out this amazing place where you can find the only Macaroons sold in Ipoh (apparently :P).

Okaylah, I had another ulterior motive but let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that it served good yummy food too…

[flickr id=”8175114513″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Yeap, little did I know that the restaurant cum lounge served a prized dish called “Ona Laksa“, an original dish created by the chef (and owner too!) that looks oh-so-heavenly and tastes very unique, similar to Assam Laksa but with a twist!

Seriously, you have to try this. And do not have it WITHOUT the original sambal. No, really.

[flickr id=”8175114317″ thumbnail=”large” overlay=”true” size=”large” group=”” align=”none”]

Ta-da! The macaroons I came here for! (No, that’s not the lady’s name – it’s those colourful thingies she’s holding). Andrea is the young lady responsible of running the business, so why not go support her by going to the Facebook Page and order some not-to-sweet yummy macaroons for a great occasion 🙂

[flickr id=”8175147934″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

She also happens to be the daughter of the Owner, Anna, wife to Andrew Ong, and is responsible of packing the hundreds of sandwiches they make for visitors. Yum.

[flickr id=”8175148140″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Here comes Andrew. He kinda looks like a character from Prince of Tennis right? I think he’s the coolest dad I’ve ever seen with that funky hairstyle haha. He even plays tennis professionally and owns his own hair saloon! Must go there cut hair one day 😛

[flickr id=”8175147820″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

The paintings around the restaurant is always for sale, a great strategy to always make sure the surroundings look refreshed in every visit. They aren’t half bad too, really nice to look at while having a meal or two.

[flickr id=”8175148460″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Did I tell you that it’s a shop for travellers too? They even have home-sewed dresses for souvenirs! Talk about being enterprising 😀

[flickr id=”8175148024″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Oh and this is so nostalgic – Nescafe’s tissue box! If that were on sale too, I’d bought it for sentimental sake hehe.

[flickr id=”8175114195″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Other dishes served apart from Ona Laksa includes Stewed Beef Spaghetti (fusion between Western & Asian)

[flickr id=”8175147288″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Spaghetti Bolognaise with Sausage, can’t get any simpler and delicious as this.

[flickr id=”8175147180″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

And even curry. Not sure what curry this is, will get back to you guys as soon as possible but it does smell lovely. Definitely home-cooked!

[flickr id=”8175115337″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Well sorry for the not really informative post but I really just liked the ambience here. Everytime I come in I felt like I was home, and thus made myself feel as much hehe. Lots of toys to be bought as well, like this cute M&M dispenser!

[flickr id=”8175148322″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

And for last minute gifts, this place has it all too: stuff toys such as these cute teddy bears! Only wish they could look more like Ted the Talking Bear. I’d bought it for sure 😛 Thunder buddies!

[flickr id=”8175114423″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

In any case my next blog post will be about more Ipoh food like their famous dim sum as well as pork satay. After all, that’s the main reason why ANYBODY goes to Ipoh right? Haha. Okay fine, for the pretty girls too 😛 But yeah if you ever get up there, don’t forget to try the Ona Laksa, definitely an unforgettable experience everyone should have! Say hi to the owners for me if you do 🙂

The Soliano's – The old family of Malaysia's music history

Many regard the Soliano family as one of the most talented musical family in Malaysia.

[flickr id=”8087304529″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]Taken outside the studio. Very chillax bunch of group, super friendly and definitely close to one another

The only vocal harmony group in Malaysia for the last 30 years, the Solianos got their musical genes from their great father, jazz legend Alfonso Soliano. Alfonso was a revered name in the music circles in the 70s till 90s. He founded the then Orkes RTM (Radio Television Malaysia) and helped won many awards and recognitions for Malaysia.

It wasn’t until yesterday that I got to meet them in person, and even visited their studio! Come let’s have a tour around, shall we?

[flickr id=”8087307577″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

The moment I got into the studio located at TTDI, I saw a wall full of signatures. I later realized that a lot of prominent artists have actually came here before, and this was a mark of how influential the Soliano’s are!

[flickr id=”8087307395″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

Oh and look who’s here as well? It’s Ash, and turns out he works here as well. Got Poesy to pose with this amazingly cheerful guy haha

[flickr id=”8087307225″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

As Poesy is the adopted Chinese sister of The Soliano’s and personal friends with the late maestro saxophonist, Salvador Guerzo, she read a testimonial in honour of in last week’s TRIBUTE TO SALVADOR GUERZO 12 & 13 October 2012 for No Black Tie‘s 14th anniversary. This is her in the studio while I’m at the console room. A real studio baby!

[flickr id=”8087306825″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

And this is what the studio looks like. Look at them walls – sound proof kao kao and looks like they’ve spent loads on it! But then again, that’s how the Soliano’s show that they take what they do seriously. Some things aren’t meant to be discounted – quality is of utmost importance!

PS the guy next to Poesy is none other than Wynton Soliano, who manages Solianos Sound Solutions, a place for people to jam together and make a recording. RM150/hour corporate rate, RM85 for musician rehearsals. There’s also a drum practice room at RM10/hour. Many more packages, for further info please visit the page -> Solianos Sound Solutions.

By the way I love the fact that they are in to supporting the local start up bands, hence the affordability of the rooms!

[flickr id=”8087306675″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

That’s me trying to play the drums haha. Without the sticks 😛

[flickr id=”8087306435″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

And that’s us being mock singers, right after The Soliano’s were having a rehearsal. You could still feel the energy in there!

[flickr id=”8087305944″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

I love how the outside looks damn posh as well. Don’t ask me about the bike, I don’t know why it’s there LOL. Bottomline is, the place is totally sound proof and you can expect no disturbance from other studios!

[flickr id=”8087305901″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

The console room! I’ve only ever seen this in movies or in Youtube, but not in real life. Maybe now I can start my singing career on YouTube…. *shy*

[flickr id=”8087305593″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

While I was exploring, Poesy and the others were actually listening to the mastered recording of her song. She sounded waaaaay different when she’s singing, really nice and done well! Suffice to say, a lot of people have actually bought her track as of today, and if you want one, you better ask me fast!

[flickr id=”8087305374″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

The legendary album itself.

Anyhow it was time to leave as it was late. And on the way out, I saw a very familiar name… Do you recognize it?

[flickr id=”8087305228″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

None other than Fuad Alhabshi (@Fuadkyoto) of Kyoto Protocol (@kyotoband) fame!

[flickr id=”8087305077″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

I really wanna thank these guys for opening up my eyes to the scene I’m not very familiar with. And of course to Poesy for inviting me to this momentous occasion.

[flickr id=”8087304897″ thumbnail=”medium_640″ overlay=”true” size=”medium_640″ group=”” align=”none”]

The rest of the family members.

Now in their fourth generation, the Solianos have its family members spread all over Malaysia and Singapore. The current team consisting of Isabella, Coni, Tristano, Rizal, Velentino and Irene, led by Salvador Guerzo performed as a band from 1979-1990 fine establishment such as the Regent Hotel, Shangri-La hotel and The Royal Selangor Club, to name a few. In recent years, they have moved their performing venues to Langkawi Datai and No Black Tie.

Soliano’s repertoire includes jazz numbers, popular tunes, and standard music with vocal harmony being their forte. Many have compared them to Manhattan Transfer with a quintessential Malaysian flavor. Many are awed when they hear the 7-part harmony (7 voices singing harmony together) for the first time; it is the signature singing style of the Solianos that never fails to leave a strong impression on the listeners.

No Black Tie has seen 14 years of passing great musicians from all over the world, perform on their stage. The club is home to many great artists and creative celebrities in Malaysia, also where the rich, famous, talented and decadent let their hair down. To commemorate this milestone, No Black Tie recently unveiled a Fazioli piano, a fully handmade precision beauty flown in from Sacile. Evelyn (NBT owner) and her sister Meilin Hii, both talented concert pianists visited the maker Paulo Fazioli in Italy just a few weeks ago to make the purchase of this legendary piano. There are only 2 Faziolis known in Malaysia and this is the first one to be in a public performance venue.

As before, the world’s greatest pianists passing by our region will flock to NBT to perfor
m, impromptu even, where bonus performances from surprise artists often happens, where the magic of music truly exists in our very own Malaysia.

You seen one before? 😉

Go like them on Facebook kay, they deserve our support! https://www.facebook.com/solianos/

PS – The Soliano’s were at Wynton’s studio to rehearse for the tribute for the late Salvador Guerzo in conjunction with Malaysia’s premier jazz club No Black Tie’s 14th anniversary.
