Premium shisha flavours @ Dutamas

While waiting for Joanne’s visit to Sony Music Entertainment office at Dutamas, I perchance upon a new shisha place who were open way before the normal opening times of most shisha bars… In this case it was easily around 4pm or so. Immediately I was coerced into having a seat and the first thing I ordered was their mint tea, which unfortunately they did not have.

However they reassured me that it was because they were new in town, and in future it will be a must have. In fact when the tea arrived, I forgave them over the stunningly beautiful tableware placed before me… I shall let the pictures do the describing because mere words were not enough even to start with the intricate designs on their teaspoon.

The shisha owners were humble people who claimed that their operations were from Pavilion’s Carlos, which was made clear when they showed me their menus- it had premium flavours like White Grape for example, which was near champagne quality. However since it was too early to enjoy such a premium taste, I went for Double Apple Mint instead, which came in this beautiful emerald furry hookah!

In the meantime I thought I could order some local delicacies here, which surprised me when what came turned out to be fallefal with bits of roast chicken and fries, served in tomato and mayonnaise. However it tasted good, and that was all I could ask for 🙂

So there I was, a king, seated on the throne, shishaing away :))

Pimp time: Heart4Hope t-shirts sold by Yvonne Foong in order to support her battle with Neurofibromatosis Type 2. A great example to those who possess a healthy body to stop whining and do something to help yourself. Peace yo.

I will definitely look forward to coming back here again one fine night, to try out their super bong machine (far left!) coupled with their premium white grape molasses. The fact that the area is protected by high walls overlooking the roads means that there won’t be much wind around, meaning that I could perform my rings trick over and over again until I get enough of syok-sendiriness hehe. Who’s with me? 🙂

Speaking at YOUTH'10 Conferences – I'm clueless!

YouthMaybank

When Michael Teoh told me that he was surprised I wasn’t invited to give a talk at the YOUTH’10 Conferences in conjunction with the YOUTH’10 Festival reputably Malaysia’s Largest Youth Festival, I told him… Hey, why the surprise?

Truth is, me being myself, I haven’t really done any “leading” at all when it comes to, say, “heading” any single movement. I’ve always been counting my blessings for being able to meet real leaders of my time, and of course myself for recognizing their potential, sifting them apart from hundreds of others who may not necessarily have the best of agendas- that would be the real success I would admit to. I would then position myself as their partner, working on the systems in the background while they go forth and spur movements which they are very passionate about. I also believe the partners, or leaders as most would call them, would have also realized that without a solid, self-sustaining system or community of believers behind their charismatic excellence, they would have been burnt out long ago. I believe that’s where appreciation comes in, and with that, the ability to talk to one another on the same level even though I belong to the “back-end”, so to speak.

So it is with pleasure that I announce my real contribution to the leadership of our current generation’s multifaceted community is not actually by starting one of my own, but by rightly locating existing leaders who I believe in and share their passion with, and support them unselfishly. The true significance of choosing this path instead of leading my own movement is so that I can play true to the many interests that I have which leads to the ultimate goal I would like to achieve; to inspire, motivate and activate via empowerment three main areas in life of the young corporates and youths, which are in finance/corporate, unity and education.

YouthFest

Without going on and on about my personal story, here’s what’s happening: Young Corporate Malaysians which I co-founded together with Wan Mohd Firdaus and Iliyas Jamil along with the rest of the conveners became partners to YOUTH’10, which I described here. Little did I know that Michael Teoh, being a very avid supporter of what I do, gave me an opportunity to talk

Nevertheless I wasn’t about to let this opportunity go, despite not being a public speaker (maybe I should join the Toastmaster to improve!) or an entertainer. If I make a fool out of myself, so be it. If I happen to impress, I thank God for the miracle hehe. Whatever it is, do help support me cause I’ll appreciate every single confidence boost I can get, especially since I’m daunted by the other speakers in the Conference who happen to be famous celebrities or people who’ve done really amazing things! Read their profile here. Then compare them with this blogger that only know how to attend blogger meets and tweetups and movie premiers and events hehe. FAR CRY WEH!

And it doesn’t help that my name sounds so cartoonish among the other cool names in the line up. Why Chris Spinzer Tock, WHY?!?!

1, 2, Freddy's coming for you…

That’s right, thanks to Evo and Advertlets I got to watch Nightmare on Elm Street and met a whole lot of bloggers there I’ve not seen for ages! Anyway without further ado, I present to you my review…

Genre: Horror
Directed by: Samuel Bayer
Staring: Jackie Earle Haley, Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara,Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Clancy Brown
Released: April 30th, 2010

THE GENERAL IDEA

A remake of the 80s horror classic, this movie follows the lives of a group of highschool students who are tormented in their dreams by the same nightmare. The nightmare is a supernatural serial killer who wears a glove with bladed fingers, out for revenge on the children of the parents who brutally caused his death. I won’t spoil it further for you, but all I can say is that there were many “shocking” scenes, however they don’t last so you won’t get nightmares for nights to come, not to worry 🙂

THE GOOD

The character acting in the movie is actually pretty good. There were no outstanding “that person is horrible” kind

of thing. And they all perform scared and tormented really well.

The movie is all about Freddy, so lets go there. He looks GOOD. Its not the same, and the personality is different, but its good. The burns look like burns. Up close you even see gaps in his skin showing charred and severed tendons underneath. He is horrific looking which works. And the voice is good, and he still has the “one liner” snark while he is tormenting and killing his victims. I thought Freddy himself was done EXTREMEMELY well.

The effects for the most part were very well done. Invisible hands throwing people around the room looks effective and not like they were on wires. Most of the time I believed people were getting hurt.

The biggest concern over the remake is that they would demystify Freddy’s past by showing too much of what really happened. I will not spoil how its revealed but it is effective and does not take away from Freddy’s history at all. I wont say what’s changed, but it all works.

There are a lot of nods to the original with scenes like the claw in the bathtub, and it generally follows the same plot and story with some minor changes that don’t ruin everything.

THE BAD

Some of the effects were so poorly thought out that it detracts from the effect. In one scene a boy “stabs himself in the neck” with a knife (Freddy in the dream) and then proceeds to pull the knife across his neck. Physically it cant work the way he does it and it ruined the effectiveness of this shocking scene. That and when someone gets blood splattered on his shirt… the blood shouldnt move around. Honestly, is it that hard to splatter blood on ONE shirt and just wear it?

There are some logic holes in the film. The scene in which Freddy’s death happens is in a dream. Freddy controls the dreams, so it made no sense that he would choose to reveal this to that victim at that time. But maybe you can explain to me if I’ve missed out something? Leave a comment, let’s debate 🙂

OVERALL

This is a fitting film in the Nightmare series, however its not IN the Nightmare series. The measuring stick by which this film will be graded is more often than not be set against the original. And I think this was better. Its not perfect, but neither was the original. I’m just an ass when it comes to horror films, prefer those with lasting lingering feeling that follows you home 😉

I give Nightmare on Elm Street a 7 out of 10. Pictures courtesy of theJessicat.com.

Of Youth '10 Festival and Dreams

Ok as some of you may have found out, I am no longer with my first paying corporate job right after graduation. Does this mean that I’m “graping” now? Yes, and no. Allow me to elaborate:

Can you spot me?

Yes, I finally found the necessary guts needed to get out of my comfort zone with a fixed salary to work on goals that truly matter, at least to me. I may be free from my corporate slavery working from 8.30am till 5.30pm, sometimes longer, but for some reason the past 2 weeks were the most hectic days of my life. Labour Day, which was the 31st 0f April, become the last day of my corporate stint at ECM Libra, and also the first day towards a 6 figure project which I hope to secure before Youth ’10 Festival happening  on the 28th to the 30th of May 2010. A tall order I might add seeing how huge this project is worth, but nevertheless, a man can but dream.

As you may suspect, yes, the project will relate to most of the organizations I’m currently attached with, not only as the cofounder of Young Corporate Malaysians but also as a technical advisor to RandomAlphabets and Wago, and lastly, as a council member of the Imperial College Alumni Association in Malaysia. It will affect mostly the development of Youths and the Young Corporates of Malaysia, especially in the finance and economic field (hint: BURSA Malaysia), so that they are better equipped to be the leaders to the nation I so dearly love, the country I call home, Malaysia.

Thus from now on, my blog will not necessarily just be on events and food reviews (in fact I can hardly find the time to write on any of those, mostly I just cover them via my Twitter account at @spinzer) but will also contain splatters of re-enlightenments and dreams, and hopefully mostly of achievements. Otherwise you’d find the blog dead, like how it has been for the past 3 weeks or so.

I hope all of you will share with me your support as I embark in this journey full of challenges. For instance, in my personal finance situation, I am currently in debt no thanks to my credit card usage and also to the surprise stunt my ex-company pulled on me. However thanks to the support of my loved ones, I’ve shredded my cards for good, and will be working on personal projects to relinquish my debts fully before the end of June. What personal projects you ask? Well, in case you didn’t know I provide support and solutions on complete startups as well as social media strategy for small companies and personal blogs, some of them listed on my “Adding links” tab you see above. I don’t intend to make a business out of it, but it does help in terms of quick cash, and as of now I’ve gotten my debt half paid already!

On a personal note, I want to thank the guys at Live & Inspire for making me a columnist of their online magazine. I don’t know when my articles will be up but when it is, I’ll let you know. It’ll mostly be about my inspirations and joy in every day life 🙂

I also want to make a special mention to the guys at Sunway University College for requesting me to be a judge on their newest online bloggest contest initiative called My Success, My Dreams aimed at Malaysians between 15-17 year old. It does my great honour to be places along the likes of Khailee, and I really appreciate it.

Finally, I want to let you know that I’ll be taking part in the Relay For Life – a Social Media Initiative by Niki Cheong, so do read up on what it is all about and show your support by donating on my behalf!

It’s time to take charge of my dreams, and turn it into a reality filled with passion and the love to live!
