Non-Halal Nasi Lemak @ Jalan Hang Tuah

Have you ever heard of a non-halal source of nasi lemak situated at the heart of KL from any of your friends? If you did, did you have a good look at their twinkling eyes and drooling mouth as they describe to you how tasty the nasi lemak is, when added with their favourite curry chicken, lap cheong and even luncheon meat?

the signboard

If you did, chances are that you’ve already stumbled upon this area located at Jalan Hang Tuah, where you can see this brightly lit signboard which has nothing to do with the nasi lemak stall that is situated below it. In fact, it’s pretty amazing that an unknown, unbranded stall like this one got its word-of-mouth recognition although it was situated far away from busy areas of KL.

thre stall

The area itself is littered with tables and chairs, with only 2 hawker stalls providing nasi lemak and chee cheong fun. But looking at the crowd sitting down huddled together enjoying their meals vivaciously, mostly from residents and students living at the apartments surrounding this area, you’d start to wonder what on earth makes their food so heavenly that PJians like us would go this far, just to have a bite!

andrew watching

Pjians like us, would refer to both me and Andrew from drewnity.com. Usually there would be more people but we decided to have a romantic supper together at around 11pm. And even then, the place was still pretty crowded!

selection ofd choices

Queuing up at the hawker stall can sometime take unreasonable time, no thanks to customers who would take away up to 10 freaking boxes of nasi lemak at one go! I shit you not! Luckily for us the said situation happened right after we got our food. Can’t help but pity the few people behind us who had to wait at least 10-15 minutes waiting for their turn.

As you can see, the selection is pretty limited in my humble opinion. However, they had to be pretty good because at that time, some of the dishes were being refilled, meaning that quantity of the “kuah” they had wasn’t their strength, but the quality of it!

andrew

After verification, we found that it was true that their dishes were to die for. Andrew himself couldn’t resist munching down his food as soon as we got seated at our table. He especially liked the sambal they have, which he always orders extra of.

andrew's

This meal of his consist of 2 chickens!! Plus other things as well. Here’s one downer point: the food here is actually more expensive compared to other nasi lemak places. They charge for every single piece of food you take!

Oh yes. This is true for the ground nuts and ikan bilis. I kid you not lol.

me

I was, however, quite curious as a first timer who’s only had first hand information from Andrew, Ren and a few others. I mean, with all the talk about it, I can’t help but put some kind of expectation on it right? Especially after finding out that it was situated at a largely unknown spot, which takes a bit of know-how to get there as well, I was so curious to find out what makes this nasi lemak so special to this point of insatiable craving!

mine

But as I took a look at my dish, I guess there could be many reasons why. I mean, how often do you get to eat luncheon meat together with your nasi lemak? or lap cheong, for that matter. Certainly a source of something unique in town that no one else has. Also, for some reason the messy outlook of the food on my plate looks appealing!

We gobbled up our food without much chatting between us and Andrew’s friend who came a bit later. In the end I guess the portion was still quite lacking despite the price I paid for, which as around RM6-ish. Andrew’s was RM8 cause he took two pieces of chicken. I guess when the stall owners know they are famous, they can charge any price they want because customers will come back for more anyway, since there’s no competing option for them.

That’s when we ordered the chee cheong fun which was the only other option available at this place. It was yummy, and thankfully, cheap as well. One thing Andrew tried to ask me to do was to put in the soup water (the boiling water used to cook the “liu” into our finished plate of chee cheong fun, to add to the leftover sauce. This is then drank like a soup which is apparently a tradition that came from somewhere! Who else knows about this, please tell me why!

Anyway, I have to say the experience was good though. All in all the food here was pretty tasty but I guess I wished the nasi lemak was a little bit more cheaper so that I can have more on my plate. Drinks were reasonably priced though limited in option as well. Reminds me of Kin Kin Spicy Pan Mee whereby only their Spicy Pan Mee and herbal drinks are sold throughout the day lol. Talk about exclusivity πŸ˜‰

My Pre-Valentine's @ Garden, 1 Utama

I usually leave Valentine’s open for any last minute requests, so that leaves Valentine’s eve to be spent with the people I love. Here they are:

birds house
*tweet tweet*

Aren’t they adorable? Hahaha okay I’m kidding, these birds are part of Garden’s decoration which cannot be missed if you’re coming out from the basement into the Central Area at the New Wing, 1 Utama. In fact they were so cute we decided there and then that we will celebrate our pre-valentine’s here.

birdhouse restaurant

My two loved ones aren’t those cute birds in the bird house, but Mikel and Zoe instead! They look so adorable posing with the birdhouse, don’t they? lol. This was all done while waiting for Christine, whom all of us were meeting for the first time, to arrive. It’s amazing how plurk brought us together like this πŸ™‚

garden

Welcome to Garden, 1 Utama πŸ™‚

zoe

Garden’s ambience is really, really beautiful. A touch of nature with classy elegance created a fairy-like effect during our dinner session. Here’s Zoe smiling happily with the lovely scenery all around her πŸ˜€

drinking soup
My soup was first to arrive, it was pretty quick service if you asked me! Not too bad tasting too.

The service was great even with quite a decent amount of customers sitting around the area. There were 3 different sitting areas and one could opt for a dark, foresty feel, an open air feel (where we are) and the corner, out-of-the-way feel where couples can choose to be intimate without being watched πŸ˜‰

zoe and tea

Zoe’s tea arrive just then. She ordered some kind of flowery tea just to see what it’s all about, and we weren’t disappointed at all; the tea set was just simply too cute for words! The aroma was heavenly too, though one would find it wierd that the tea had a flowery taste to it. It’s something you have to get used to I guess.

tea cup special

One of the nicest things about the tea set is its tea cup. It’s so very dainty and cute, and you can see sort of

oh and I have to add everything in this restaurant is for sale! (watch out for the tags attached to the furnitures!)

mikel and christine

Mikel and Christine here can be seen with their food… In fact, all of them ordered pasta in some form or another. Admittedly the portion wasn’t quite as big as, say, Italiannies, but we assure you these tastes much better (and less pricey, too!) πŸ˜€

my pineapple and ham sandwhichs

I got myself the pinapple and hamd sandwhich. Don’t ask me why I got them, but I thought it was refreshing to have something citrusy that night πŸ˜‰

pasta podorello

Here’s Zoe’s pasta podorello, simply cause she’s a vegetarian and this is probably one of the few vegetarian selection there is. It was great though, I mean, who could resist those cute, juicy cherry tomatos!

calamari rings

Then our Calamari rings came, which was I have to say pretty good! Mikel definitely loved it πŸ˜€

happy zoe

Needless to say, Zoe was happy as well πŸ˜€

mikel and me

Yes we all know once the food is over and taken away, the blogger reaction in us calls for a great photographing secion. Here’s Mikel and myself camwhoring πŸ˜‰

so cute mikel and christine

Hahhaa I really love this photo!! lol. Thanks Mikel and Christine… You guys made it awesome πŸ™‚

where we ate

With that all over and done with, I feel Gardens gave the bestestest ambience ever for this year’s pre-Valentine’s. Thank you Garden, for providing us with such a beautiful place to camwhore πŸ˜›

mikel the flasher

Even to the end, I’m sure all of us were hoping for the time to stop. Having so much fun, laughing together and just enjoying each other’s company without any awkwardness is something I would give anything for. We’re so comfortable with each other that even when Mikel “flashed” we didn’t feel embarrassed one bit! hahha he’s just too funny XD

my hearts

Thank you, Zoe, Mikel and Christine. My pre-Valentine’s day wouldn’t have been right without you guys. It was because of this that the day afterwards didn’t seem so bad after all, besides being uneventful for the first time in umpteenth years!

My heart belongs to you all. Thank you for sharing yours with me. *hugs*

Decanter Too @ Hartamas with Clem

decanter mat

Clem and I had to meet up before he leaves to further his studies in Australia. No, it wasn’t because we were close buddies and haven’t seen each other for ages. Neither was it due to the fact that we contact each other only during random times when we need to speak about some unspeakable things. The two reasons above cannot even start explaining how we’ve gotten close to one another.

In fact, it was simply because we had to. And that’s a good enough reason for me πŸ™‚

bottles galore

So we took some time off to fix a date at one of his all-time favourite dinner place, called Decanter Too. Decanter is actually a device to hold the decantation of a liquid with sediments (such as wine) so I guess the elegant and classy theme suits this place pretty well as you can see above.

flowerful clem

Though we started off pretty late, no thanks to Clem’s inadequateness in fully utilizing the technology of his GPS system which managed to detour him into 2 other Decanter branches before finding the right one, the atmosphere became almost pleasant as we step foot into the dainty bar. Reliving the episode did well to spark a humourous setting, while the flowers placed on the table made us feel that it would have been lovely romantic if we each brought our own loved ones respectively πŸ™‚

sideview profile

It was only when he took out his humoungous DSLR that I woke out of my dream and realised that we were here for a few specific reasons. One of which is, of course, to review this place we were in.

As for the other, it’s really a secret between us πŸ˜‰

front assault

No, it wasn’t for him to shoot me. Though this picture is, quite honestly, very intimidating lol.

gorillapod

Of course we had help from his Gorillapod for certain shots that needed to be stable, as the lighting within the precinct was neither too bright nor too dim so a little bit of exposure could certainly be useful.

potrait shot of clem and table

Kinda like this picture taken here. Wouldn’t you agree that my Lumix LX2 takes simply gorgeous pictures? πŸ˜€

bar

Taking a look around, one of the place’s prominent place of interest would be at the bar. I really think it’s well designed, the placement of furnitures, the orientation of the taps, the decor surrounding it… it certainly was an eye pleaser in more ways than one πŸ˜‰

me

Here you can see how the lighting here was midtoned, hence the dark features on myself but bright where the bar is. It also shows how Clem is clueless on operating my camera by not focusing on me lol.

fried lamb and sauteed onion

Our food came. Our choices for appetisers were the Fried Lamb that cost RM12 together with the Sauteed Onions that costed RM6. Unfortunately the Fried Lamb didn’t turn out the way we expected it to be; it was a little too much on the spicy side against our preference. The Sauteed Onions however were delicious. Then again, you can’t really go wrong with that, can you?

clem's chicken cohp

Clem’s main meal came, and it was the same meal he had the first time he was here. This was his second. Guessed he really loved the Hainanese Chicken Chop which cost around RM16. Pictures doesn’t do it justice, but I thought it tasted fine.

my bbq chicken chop

Well at least it was better than my BBQ Chicken Chop which was one of the specialties for the day. Once again Decanter has a knack at surprising her customers by giving the most unexpected looking dishes from what we thought it was going to be. To me, it looks and even tastes more like Chilli Chicken Chop, which I think most of you would have expected from the pictures anyway. Nevertheless it tasted OK and cheap as well at RM16

no flash

As usual we would be taking pictures of our food before tearing it apart and I suddenly remembered one side project that I gave a thought about, thanks to this uncanny ability of mine to catch the flash in action within a split second.

So the above is one without flash.

flash!

And this is just when the flash was, er, well, flashed πŸ˜‰

Doesn’t it give of a cool effect on the subjects, as well as an amazing feel to the photographer shining brilliantly? lol

happy clem!

All in all, the food, ambience and the amazing company made this night a truly memorable night to remember. Along with other quirks that happened in between these times as well which had to do with a certain toilet break, but that’s another story for another time πŸ˜‰

You can catch Clem’s story by clicking here. His photos are amazing too, so maybe it’d do Decanter more justice than I could ever dream of doing. In fact he loves the place so much he even brought family here to celebrate his mother’s birthday!

beautiful lounge

I really wouldn’t mind giving this place another visit, thanks to the unpricey items on the menu despite the classy and elegant feel of the place. It’s also situated strategically close to the junction at Hartamas, located in a special commercial square facing the main road, so despite Clem’s inability to get his directions right, it is really hard not to miss this place!

And then this time I’d be reserving the sofa area instead, because it’d make me feel like a prince. Now I just need to fill in the spaces with my throng of servants πŸ˜‰
